Northeastern IPM Center - Center Grant Programs

Northeastern IPM Center Grant Programs

Our grant programs foster the development and adoption of IPM. They are an important part of the Northeastern IPM Center's mission and strategic plan. We advertise new requests for applications (RFAs) via this website and our email and print mailing lists. If you would like to join our mailing lists, please email us or contact us by phone or mail. We also provide a list of some current IPM-related funding opportunities from other organizations. The four Regional IPM Centers, including the Northeastern IPM Center, are funded by a USDA competitive grant program.

The two main grant programs from the Center are the Regional Integrated Pest Management - Northeastern (RIPM) and IPM Partnership grant programs, summarized below. They differ in terms of eligibility, project types, funding amounts, and the application process. The two programs are summarized and compared in this chart (updated October 2009): Northeastern IPM Center Grants at a Glance. The Center has also been involved in other grant programs.

John Ayers manages the grant programs for the center. If you have technical questions about submitting proposals or reports online, please contact Amy Galford. Phone numbers and mailing addresses are on the staff directory page.

The Center uses an online grant database to provide information on previously funded projects and for submission of grant reports and Partnership grant applications. The system was developed primarily by Ron Stinner at the NSF Center for IPM with input from the National IPM Evaluation Group (NIPMEG), and funded by a grant from USDA-ARS to the Northeastern IPM Center. Data entry of projects the Center has funded is underway. Information in our database will be uploaded to the federal interagency database of IPM projects. Older information on funded projects is indexed here.

Northeast Regional IPM Competitive Grants (RIPM)

The Northeast Regional Integrated Pest Management (RIPM) Competitive Grants Program funds research, extension, and combined projects in our region. The project director must be employed by certain colleges, universities, or agricultural experiment stations in the Northeast. USDA-NIFA and the IPM Center work together to administer this program.

The Request for Applications is released in early fall and the deadline is in late fall. The actual application is submitted via the federal government's grants.gov website.

See the RIPM grant program page for more details and application instructions.

IPM Partnership Grants

Projects funded through the IPM Partnership Grants must further the mission of the Northeastern IPM Center, address or identify regional IPM priorities, and benefit the region at large. We encourage projects that extend IPM information to the audiences who will use this knowledge to decrease the risks associated with pest management. The five project types are: (1) IPM Working Groups, (2) IPM Issues, (3) Regional IPM Publications, (4) IPM Planning and Assessment Documents, and (5) IPM Minigrants. Eligibility for this program is broad. The Center has primary responsibility for administering this program.

The Request for Applications is released in early fall and the deadline is in December. Applications are submitted via the center's online grants database system. See the Partnership grant program page for more details and application instructions.

Other Center Grant Programs

The Vegetable and Strawberry IPM Travel Grants Program is program run by the Northeast Vegetable IPM Working Group.

In 2007, the Center ran a minigrant program after the Green-Blue summit on IPM and water quality.

The Pest Management Alternatives Program (PMAP) is a federal grant program administered by USDA. The Northeastern IPM Center helps provide regional priorities and relevance review for this program.

In 1995 (prior to the formation of the IPM Centers), the National IPM Initiative Phase I Planning Grants program funded eight projects in the northeast. The priorities identified from these grants have been used to develop further projects in the northeast.
